Dr. Hakan Kaya joined Cancer Care Northwest in May 2004. In addition to medical oncology and hematology, he is a fellowship trained stem cell transplant physician. He is the Director of Inland Northwest Autologous Stem Cell
Transplant Program. Dr. Kaya has a special interest in treatment of hematologic malignancies (multiple myeloma, lymphoma, leukemia) and prostate cancer.

A 1993 graduate of Ankara University School of Medicine in Turkey, Dr. Kaya completed his internal medicine residency at the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center. During his residency, he earned the special Recognition Award in Poster Presentation with his research in allogeneic bone marrow transplantation at the American College of Physicians-Oklahoma Chapter Annual Meeting in 1995, Best Poster Presentation Award at the Department of Medicine House Staff Research Day in 1996, and Chief Residents’ Award for Outstanding Service to the Residency Program in 1997. Following his residency,  Dr. Kaya completed a three-year fellowship in hematology, medical oncology, and stem cell transplantation at the Comprehensive Cancer Center of Wake Forest University in North Carolina. During his fellowship, he studied new advances in prostate cancer and published on the subject including a contribution to the well-known textbook, Prostate Cancer: Principles & Practice.

As a Clinical Faculty member with the University of Washington School of Medicine Spokane Campus, Dr. Kaya is an active teacher for residents and medical students. In June 2007, he was honored by the Internal Medicine Residency program of Spokane with the Outstanding Clinical Faculty award for 2006-2007. Dr. Kaya is also the recipient of the Assembly of Turkish American Associations (ATAA) 2004 Outstanding Achievement in the Arts/Sciences Award. In his spare time, Dr. Kaya, a black belt, enjoys practicing tae-kwon-do.
